High school students in Salt Lake City, Utah, have voiced their support for HB333, which would tax e-cigarettes in the state. However, KUTV.com reports that a criminal investigation is under way due to threats that the students have received, in part, from the vaping community. The Davis County sheriff told 2News that he is opening an investigation.
Rep. Paul Ray (R-Clearfield), who sponsors the bill, showed the news site some of the statements that have been made toward the students via social media and private messaging:
“One message was full of curse words and told the recipient to leave e-cigarettes alone. Another commenter on Facebook said she wanted to ‘throat kick’ someone. A third message told a student to ‘Die. Please,” the news site reported. One even said, “Let’s go beat the crap out if (sic) this kid.”
Ray has passed copies of the threats to the police. Charges may be put forth if there is enough deeming evidence. For the full story, visit http://kutv.com/news/local/high-school-students-supporting-e-cig-tax-bill-are-threatened-lawmaker-says.
