E-Cig Survey Shows 50 Percent of Physicians ‘See A Role’ For Harm Reduction

Saint Louis University School of Medicine

Saint Louis University School of Medicine

Research presented at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Meeting by Venkatkiran Kanchustambham, M.D., of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, showed that 50 percent of physicians “see a role for e-cigarette as part of a harm reduction strategy,” according to a story on Healio.com. Kanchustambham said that few studies, however, have researched long-term safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes.

Kanchustambham’s findings came from an anonymous online questionnaire sent to all residents, fellows and faculty in the departments of internal medicine and surgery at Saint Louis University. Fifty-one percent responded (114 people).

The study showed:

  • 57 percent knew what vaping meant

  • 9 percent were “very familiar with e-cigarettes

  • 26 percent were not familiar with e-cigarettes

  • 15 percent of physicians said they would advise to patients e-cigarettes as nicotine-replacement therapy

  • 19 percent were aware of a presence of carcinogens in e-cigarettes

  • 38 percent were aware of polyethylene glycol

  • 91 percent were aware of nicotine

  • 76 percent of respondents were worried about the lack of evidence regarding long-term safety

  • 50 percent were worried about the idea of e-cigarettes as starter products for nonsmokers

  • 51 percent were worried about the FDA regulation

  • 42 percent were worried about marketing to youth

  • 54 percent wanted stricter regulation

  • 53 percent wanted warning labels similar to tobacco products

  • 36 percent wanted restricted advertising

  • 34 percent wanted banned sales to minors

  • 25 percent wanted banned use in public areas

  • 50 percent of the physicians surveyed saw a role for e-cigarettes as part of a “harm reduction strategy.”

HB1645 On Table in Washington State

There is legislation on the table in Washington state, with House Bill 1645, which is sponsored by Reps. Gerry Pollet, (D-North Seattle, and Paul Harris, (R-Vancouver).

According to The Olympian, “the bipartisan legislation would establish fees for licensing retailers that sell e-cigarette products and regulate Internet sales. It also would give local jurisdictions the authority to adopt their own set of electronic cigarette regulations that best fit their residents and communities.”

If the law passes, vape shops would have to secure product in displays, ones that are similar to tobacco products, for employee access only. E-cigarettes would also be regulated as tobacco products on school property and vehicles, and e-liquids would have to have child-resistant packaging and labeling with the level of nicotine on it.

Vapor Visuals: Boyce Thompson Arboretum

Hey there vape fans! We’re back this week with another installment of Vapor Visuals! This week we took a trip to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum located south of Superior, Arizona. This happens to be the largest and oldest botanical garden in the state, and was quite a delight to explore. With so many great floral smell and verity of plant life, there were times when I wasn’t sure I was still in Arizona! So here’s your map to the arboretum, and now just site back relax, and enjoy our visual tour of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum.

Yellow Barrel Cactus

The Arboretum has a large variety of Cactus. Like these Yellow Barrel Cactus

Endura T22 Cactus

One great thing about this visit, was that vaping was allowed. So I pulled out my Endura T22 that I brought with me and enjoyed walking around vaping.

Weird cactus

Speaking of vaping, we actually have five new flavors coming out today, Monday March 28th. So we’ll take a look at there flavor profiles as we tour this garden.

Red Barrel Cactus

What better picture to start with than this blooming barrel cactus? The reason I say this is that one of our flavors is called Desert Rain. Desert Rain is an oasis of prickly pear and tropical fruit flavors. Bathe yourself in the rejuvenating elixir of Desert Rain.

Devil Plant

There were so many bizarre and amazing varieties of plants, like this demonic looking Aloe. But you know what else is slightly demonic? Our new Devil’s Food Cake! Give into temptation with this decadent classic. Bringing chocolate cake to a sinful new level.

Rotunda

As I traveled through the garden, there were a lot of places for observers to take breaks, escape the sun, and still enjoy the surrounding garden. Like this covered outdoor space.

Prickly Pear

As my journey continued through the Arboretum I could tell that this was not going to be a one time visit. One reason was that the cacti looked to be only a couple weeks away from starting to bloom in full and I definitely want to be there for that!

Kbox Garden

Apart from the T22 I also brought with me the Kanger KBOX 70W Box Mod. My main reason for this was so I could have two different flavors ready go and didn’t need to worry about refilling or dripping wail hiking.

Garden Path

The flavor I had in my KBOX however, just so happened to be one of our new flavors, Gimmix. Gimmix is a nostalgic e-juice that blasts your favorite fruity cereal straight into your lungs. One of the best cereal flavors I’ve tasted! Silly critics, vaping is for adults!

Giant Aloe

Okay, this Aloe plant was crazy! I felt like I had gone back in time to the era of the dinosaurs. I know it’s hard to tell in this photo, but this plant was well over 6’2″ tall. The only reason I know this is because I felt small standing next to it and I’m 6’2″!

Garden Walkway

Continuing on we pass through this lovely covered walkway and into the demonstration garden.

Humming Bird 2

It was in this part of the Arboretum that I came across this humming bird enjoying some nectar from the flowers and I thought to myself, “I bet this little guy would enjoy our new Lemon Meringue Pie e-juice smell.” That’s right, Lemon Meringue Pie flavored e-juice. An old-fashioned treat with flaky crust, tart lemon filling, and heavenly meringue all bottled up into one delicious and refreshing vape we know you’ll love.

Cactus

As my day started to come to an end, I wanted to go checkout some more of the cactus gardens before I had to leave, and that’s when I found one of the strangest cactus’s I’ve come by yet, the Totem Pole cactus. Instead of thorns and spikes, it was waxy, bumpy, and grew into some really unique and interesting shapes.

Desert Garden

Our last, but not least, flavor we have coming to you is a new tobacco flavor developed in the heart of the South West. Tobacc O Yeah is a smooth, robust taste of tobacco that has been imbued with the sweetness of caramel. Oh yeah!

Ivy

That ends our adventures at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, for this week. But I will definitely be back soon to catch the true bloom of the desert plant life.

Well vape fans, we hope you enjoyed this week’s installment of Vapor Visuals. For many of us, vaping has opened up new opportunities in our lives. I for one am seizing the day and bringing you all along for the ride. I have the FUhattan mod and I was wondering what mod is better. I’m kind of new to this whole thing, but I’m just not satisfied with the performance of this. Any suggestions?

Hey There! I’ve never liked the term “better” or “best”. It’s kind of like asking “Hey, I have a Toyota Prius… what’s better?” I guess that depends what you want. For some people, a Toyota Prius is the “Best” and for others, not so much. No matter, without having to get a whole new mod, there are some things you can do to get the most out of the setup you currently have.

First things first, take your mod apart and clean EVERYTHING! Mech mods need some TLC from time to time to keep things working at optimum levels. Clean and polish the contacts. Clean the tube and clean the 510 connection. The next thing you can do is get high quality batteries. Higher quality batteries will have a higher amp limit, which will allow you to build lower resistance coils safely and get maximum performance from your coils. There are LOADS of brands out there making sometimes misleading claims on their amp limit and mAh. Track down some Samsung 25r batteries. They

are a very tried and true battery in the vape world.

The last thing is to build some good coils in that atomizer. The Samsung 25r battery has a pulse amp limit of 35A and a continuous amp limit of 20A, which means if you build a nice 0.2ohm coil in there. You will be good to go. Building coils just takes practice. When it all comes together you should have a nice, warm, flavorful and, above all, safe vape.

You guys know your stuff. I’m new to cloud chasing and still new to all the juices, etc. I’m running a KBOX, an Aspire Atlantis Mega along with a Cherry Bomber and drip tip, but I’m hunting for a good juice to vape with something fruit. Any pointers? Please guys.

Hey Jon! I absolutely agree with you. A good juice to vape is what makes the vaping experience so enjoyable. Because taste is so subjective it’s really hard to recommend a brand or flavor of juice. Some people want a bakery type flavor, others like fruity stuff, others like minty menthol juices. The absolute best advice I can give you is to visit a vape shop, and try the juice lines that they sell. Vape shops generally have an area set up for trying out new flavors and seeing what you like to vape.

If you don’t have access to a vape shop for the actual tasting of juices, then check on YouTube or different forums for people who have tried the juices you are interested in. Eliquid.com is a great site for checking out juices. You can find some you might be interested in, then search Google and YouTube for reviews of those juices.

Hope that helps out!

Natalie Norris Miles Help! I am a newby. Long story short, I went from a vape pen to an Eleaf 30w and Kangertech subtank, which sucked, then to the Aspire Triton subohm tank. I have been told I need 18-22 mg nicotine e-juice, then told 3mg, then 6, now 12. I was just informed my istick 30w is not suitable for the triton. My local shop did not say a word about the Triton not being a good match for the 30w iStick, but another shop did and said it could overheat. I feel like everyone just wants to sell me new gear. I am getting pissed off and ready to abandon the whole idea. Help me understand. I am, or was, a pack-a-day smoker. I am running the 25w-30w coil on the Triton rated at 0.4 ohms

Hey Natalie! Don’t lose hope. There seems to be a bit of confusion these days between store employees on what exactly they are telling the customers. As far as the juices goes, you should vape whatever satisfies you. The reason people drop their nicotine level when using tanks like the Triton is that most people find the higher nicotine juices irritating to their throat. The Triton is a “Sub-OHM” tank. Meaning the resistance is generally very low and will need a higher wattage in order to reach peak performance. In your situation running a 0.4ohm coil in the Triton, on the iStick 30w is a perfectly fine vape. If it’s working for you, then keep using it! Pick a nicotine level that satisfies you, and you are good to go.

In the future a good thing to remember is that lower resistance (OHMS) coils will need more wattage, and higher resistance coils will need lower wattage.

Happy Vaping!

Next Level Hardware: Dale Weighs in on Sigelei and Pioneer4you

Variable wattage devices are, without a doubt, the future of vaping. Even first time vapers are skipping over the Ego style vape pens and mechanical mod phases, and heading straight for variable wattage kits.

Out of all the companies in the industry, there are two that always seem to be neck-and-neck in the race to produce the hottest new mods in the market. Hailing all the way from China, we have the makers of the IPV series, Pioneer4you, and then we have Sigelei. These major players in the vape game have brought us some of the most dependable mods out today. Let’s get down to it and see what these brands have to offer you!

It would take ages to start from the beginning, so let’s just pick this up with some relatively newer devices. Starting in the single 18650 battery class, we have the IPV D2, and we have the Sigelei 75 watt. These compact devices recieved quite the warm welcome within the vaping community. The ability to run an RDA or a tank system on such a small mod made these devices a must-have. Each device sports 75 watts of usable power. Temperature control comes standard on both mods with ranges up to 662 degrees Fahrenheit on the Sigelei and 580 Fahrenheit for the IPV. Both are very dependable devices for entry-level users or people looking for more power in a smaller package.

Sigelei_75W_both__97829.1447449836.1280.1280

Sigelei 75W’s, looking absolutely gorgeous.

Moving up from the single 18650 class brings a lot more freedom regarding build styles and resistance range. These two companies have quite a bit to offer in the dual 18650 class. Between both manufacturers,  they offer devices ranging from 100 Watts all the way up to 200 watts! A couple of the most popular new mods are the IPV 5 and the Sigelei Fuchai. These two devices are currently the most powerful mods available by both companies today. Being able to fire up to 200 watts on coil builds as low as .05 puts a whole heck of a lot of possibilities at your fingertips! You don’t have to be a professional vaper to enjoy these mods though. These full size mods also sport temperature control functions just like their smaller counterparts.

Now, this is not meant to urge you to choose sides. This is merely a piece of recognition for two companies that work tirelessly to bring us our next favorite mod!

Fuchai_all__81508.1451943791.500.750

Sigelei Fuchais, stacked… in more ways than one.

The next big release would appear to be from Sigelei with their announcement of the Sigelei 213. This mod has some pretty exciting new function that is definitely new to the vape game. This mod will give you the ability to preheat your coil at a desired wattage for a programmable amount of time to cut “ramp up” time. For example, set it to fire at 100 Watts for a half second before automatically switching back to your normal wattage seamlessly.

Does this industry’s ingenuity know no bounds?! All there is to say is this year should be an exciting one for both of these companies. We all look forward to what is to come next.

Metro-252 Noros RDA Review

The Noros RDA by Metro/252 is simplistic in design but is a marvel in vaping technology.  I had the chance to grab one at VaperSlam 2, it was hard work because they were selling fast, and told the guys I would let everyone know exactly what I thought.  The 22 mm was already sold out

The Inside Scoop: TPE Diaries

We were somewhere around Mesa, on the edge of the desert when the nicotine began to take hold. I remember saying something like, “I need to rewick, maybe you should drive.” We had four mods, three tanks, two RDAs, a spool of wire, a bag of cotton, a dozen coils, 200mls of juice, eight batteries, high nic, low nic…and also a charger and a rebuild kit. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious vape collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

It was almost noon and we still had several hundred miles to go. Tobacco Plus Expo, the American dream. They had given me $300 in cash, some of which I spent on an extremely delicious sandwich. Meatball marinara, the kind where the cheese oozes and sauce is thick. Only one stop along the way, an outpost gas station. Tiny, dank, I buy a soda and use the restroom. We arrive in Vegas and check in to the hotel. The hunger grips me again. We hear of a place across the street is great, and they brew their own. Good people drink good beer. Afterwards we go to a corner store for water. Vegas is a strange place. On the strip, fortunes are gained and lost on the turn of a card, people bustle around without a care and the glow of LEDs light up the night sky. Off the strip, darkness ensues and the homeless and downtrodden mill about. The contrast of the two images casts a different light on the city than previously known. After a well-deserved rest, it was morning and time for the expo.

IMG_0012

The place is packed, and a thick fog hangs over. Vendors as far as the eye can see. It was business-to-business only, so the atmosphere was more relaxed than your average vape meet. Immediately, I am greeted by a thick, broken accent. The folks at Tesla invite me to their booth to view their newest products. I am impressed, very small but still powerful. They show me a 50w mod that fits in my hand with the tank attached. The tank goes down into the side of the mod similar to the VTR but much smaller. I decide to take a survey of the area so I’d know how much ground I’d have to cover. Bad idea. As I wade through the sea of booths I’m assaulted at every turn to check them out. A pretty girl hands me a card and invites me to their display. They have no vapor products, only the real deal. I can’t stop here, this is tobacco country! As I move on this process is repeated many times. Avoid the bad booths, find the good ones. I see the latest products from Aspire, Efest, Sigelei, Geek Vape, Innokin, Amigo, Pioneer, SMY and many others. I see Sigelei’s new touch screen mod which seems quite promising. The screen is hard like a cell phone and highly responsive. Feels more durable than the Touchbox. Aspire has perfected the hookah style vape. In addition to their previous top piece that you put into your own hookah, they now have an Aspire branded hookah and it looks amazing. Vaping in that manner really isn’t my cup of tea, but it was quite functional. In a party setting it could be just right. The Aspire Plato will release soon, and it’s set to be an improved Nebox. All of my complaints with that device are rectified in this. A glass tank that can be cleaned is the most notable one.

IMG_0006

While I’m there I also try many juices. It’s a mixed bag. Between one-note honeydews and poorly executed tobaccos, I begin to lose faith and question whether I can continue on. No sympathy for the R&D guy; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride…and if it occasionally gets a little heavier than what you had in mind, well…maybe chalk it off to forced conscious expansion: Tune in, vape out, get beaten. I get more samples, flyers and business cards than I can carry back on the plane but the good folks at Amigo offer to bring them back to Arizona for me. They run a shop called Smokin’ Vapor if you’re in the Phoenix area.
After two long days, I limp onto the plane with no problem except a wave of cravings for my sweet, sweet nicotine…but my taste buds were so burned out, by then, I wouldn’t have cared if I didn’t vape for the rest of the flight. I was asleep when we hit the runway, but the jolt brought me instantly awake. After the plane landed I rushed through the gates outside. I opened my bag and took a hit off my vape immediately, and by the time I got home my heart was filled with joy. I felt like a monster reincarnation of Hon Lik…a Man on the Move, and just nic’d enough to be totally confident.

Wales’ No Smoking Day Poll Shows Two-Thirds Have Quit Smoking

Quitters-CollageNo Smoking Day was held earlier this month in Wales, and a poll taken to celebrate the day surveyed 1,000 vapers and smokers. According to the South Wales Argus, 65 percent of e-cigarette users polled had quit smoking, with 63 percent saying that they’re using vaping as an aid to stop smoking.

Seventy percent of vapers said they would like to see more research done “into the potential risks of using e-cigarettes,” while 26 percent were confused about the mixed health messages they receive regarding e-cigarettes.

Mike Knapton, associate medical director at BHF, told the South Wales Argus: “Although vaping is much less harmful than smoking cigarettes, there is no doubt that more research is needed into the potential long term effects of the use of e-cigarettes.”

Nearly one in five adults has been reported to being a smoker in the U.K. No Smoking Day is similar to the Great American Smoke Out, where smokers can set a date to quit.

Child-Resistant Packaging Law in Massachusetts Takes Effect

Review: R200 by SMOK

I was quite impressed last time I reviewed a product from SMOK, the Guardian Pipe III kit. Kind of a geeky device that one I guess, with it’s bluetooth and pipe form factor, making it a device that would appeal very much to people like me (geeks) and sailors. This time I’m reviewing a more mainstream product, the R200, a 200W box mod with temperature control. There are quite a few of these on the market these days, in different price categories. The R200 is indeed in the low end of the price range for these 200W boxes, and on paper it’s a lot of bang for your bucks.

In the box

  • The Smok R200

  • USB cable, (for firmware upgrades only)

  • User Manual

Specifications

    • Uses 2 x 18650 Batteries (25A+ recommended)

    • Spring-Loaded 510 connection

    • Size: 85 x 55 x 23mm

    • Wattage Ouput Range: 1~200W

    • Voltage Output Range: 0.8~9V

    • 0.06-2.0 Ohm – 200-600F (100-310C) in TC mode

    • Supports Ni200, Titanium, and Stainless Steel for temp. control

    • 0.1-3.0 Ohm in VW mode

    • Overheat Protection

    • Puff Monitoring System

    • Overheat Protection

    • Short-Circuit Protection

    • MicroUSB Port for firmware upgrades

    Look and feel

The R200 is quite small considering it’s a dual 18650 box. It’s made from Aluminium and Zink Alloys so it’s quite light as well. Got quite nice rounded of edges and feels comfortable in your hand. Quite straight forward and simple design with just the logo and model name printed on the box. Nothing too fancy. The buttons rattle a bit, but not enough to bother me much.

The mod is only 23 mm wide though, which might affect the number of tanks that will look good on it. Not really a problem, but it’s good to take notice of this, just in case you plan to use it with some tank or RDA that has a diameter of more than 23 mm. It might look… silly :)

    In use

Again, the user manual from Smok is quite good, and a quick read before you start is actually worth it, just to get an overview of what this mod can do. Still the menu system is quite intuitive as well so if you have just a little experience with TC box mods from earlier you’ll manage just fine. 5 clicks on the fire button will lock or unlock the mod, 3 will bring you into the menu. Use the up and down buttons to switch between items or make changes and press fire again to confirm. Quite simple indeed.

The mod does not have built in charger, so you’ll need to take out the batteries to charge. The USB port is only for firmware upgrades. Now charging your batteries in an external charger isn’t really that much hassle, and the lid on this mod is easy to slide off being held in place by magnets. Some of these devices with built in chargers charge really slow as well, so in most cases you’ll end up taking the batteries out to charge them. However, having a built in charger is a plus if you’re travelling and don’t want to bring another charger (you probably have a cellphone charger and a laptop charger in your bag already, right?).

For temp. control the R200 supports steel, nickel and titanium wires. I’ve only tried it on steel wires for now and it seems to work pretty much as intended. You need to make sure you select dual-coil if you have that in your atomizer, or you’ll end up a bit disappointed. For TC mode you don’t select any watt output but you can select “Min”, “Soft”, “Norm”, “Hard” or “Max” which will affect how much watt is put out to reach your temperature limit I guess. I put mine to “Max”, as usual, and was pretty happy with that.

The R200 also have some more advanced settings, like allowing you to adjust the initial resistance of your atomizer, the TCR of the wire you’re using and it even has this puff monitoring system, which apparently lets you limit your number of puff pr. day as well. I don’t see why I need that to be honest. Anyway, have a look here if you want to know more about these features.

All in all it’s a pretty straight forward mod to use. You need to be quite precise when clicking 5 times to unlock the mod, but I guess you get used to it. I find the DNA-mods much more forgiving when it comes to this. Then again, that’s a totally different price range.

    Performance

I’ve tried the R200 in normal watt mode and in temp. control mode using SS wire. Both have worked very well. Comparing it to a DNA200 device, it seems to me you need to adjust this one a bit higher to get the same power out. I tried one of my tanks, that I’ve been using at 55W on a DNA200, on the R200 and I’d say it gives you about the same power at 65W. If the R200 really will give you 200W on full power I don’t know, but it sure gives me more than enough power to run any tank or RDA I have. I can’t really tell you if it’s the DNA200 delivering more than promised or the R200 that delivers a bit less, but it doesn’t really matter that much either for me. What matters is that you get a lot of consistent, reliable power for your money with the R200. I remember trying out the SMOK M65 quite a while ago, and I found it a bit unstable. This R200 however, is much more reliable.

    Pros and cons
+ Quite small for a dual 18650 mod
+ Good manual, easy to use
    + Price
    + Stable power
    – No built in charger
    – Can be a bit difficult to lock/unlock
    – Buttons rattles a bit

    Conclusion

All in all I’m quite happy with the R200 and I use it quite a lot on a daily basis. It gives me more than enough power to run all my builds, and then some. And it is probably among the cheapest 200W TC boxes out there. You can get it for like $45 or 629,- NOK from dampshop.no if you live in Norway (which is quite a good price actually, considering they offer free shipping in Norway).

Thanks to Espen at Dampshop.no for sending me this kit for review.

    Updates ‘n stuff

Hey everyone! you may have noticed there isn’t a whole lot going on with GrimmGreen.com right now.  I just wanted to give everyone an update as to why that is,  and what is going on in the vapey world of GrimmGreen.

It’s been a busy couple of months for me,  My Youtube and Namberjuice as well as launching a new podcast with RubyRoo has kept me very very busy. Additionally traveling to vape meets this year has taken up a lot of my time.

I’m literally only one dude running all this nonsense. I don’t have any assistants, or employees.  If i’m gone at a vape meet in Florida,  then no one else exists to answer emails,  respond to comments on YouTube or Instagram,  or do updates to GrimmGreen.com.   I believe i’ve stretched myself beyond what I am capable of, and unfortunately GrimmGreen.com often gets ignored.  I try my best to post any new news regarding advocacy or vape legislation.  But a lot of the old “fun” stuff I used to do like photosets and first impressions of new devices and mods have become impossible to accomplish with my busy schedule.

I’ve reached out in the past for help with keeping GrimmGreen.com updated with new content regularly, but it never seems to stick.  I’ve seen roughly a dozen contributors come and go throughout the last few years, and it’s gotten to the point where I don’t even want to bother with getting someone setup to help out.

Trust me,  this isn’t a sob story for poor busy GrimmGreen,  Just an FYI as to why things happen the way they happen.  My first priority is my YouTube,  4 videos a week,  one of which is an hour and  a half long VLOG easily takes up 80% of my work week.  Not to mention the correspondence that goes along with it including all social media and e-mails like crazy.

Namberjuice is growing by leaps and bounds as well.  We have new distro in the EU through VapeMap which i’m very very excited about, and were prepping all of our products to be compliant with the new TPD regulations in the EU areas as well.  Lots and lots going on.

At the end of the day none of this matters without the support that I get from you guys.  So I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I’m hoping to re-vamp GrimmGreen.com in the near future and make it easier to keep this site full of great vape related content.

Lastly i’ve added a calendar to the site you can view HERE in the “monthly” view you will be able to see what events i’m attending, and how it will effect my video schedule on YouTube.   Hope that helps explain a little bit of what has been going on.  I’ll wrap this up before I get any more rambly than it already is.

See you guys soon at a vape meet

    -Grimm

    Battery Safety: 3’s a Cloud

Last October, we ran a blog about battery safety and marrying your dual battery mods which I recommend if you’d like to learn more about the most important part of your device. Due to the popularity of the Reuleaux and the RX-200, we’re going to touch on the subject again today with regards to 3 battery devices.

The good news is, the properties of battery circuits remain the same regardless of the number of cells in it. That is to say, they will continue to perform as expected, in that series will treat multiple batteries (2,3 or 10) as 1 and parallel will double, triple or decuple (that’s 10x) capacity and amp limit based on the number of batteries. The first question people usually have is “I already have 2 married batteries, can I just add a 3rd?” And unfortunately the answer is a hard no. Like in real life, you can’t just bring another party into an already established and happy marriage. All parties should agree on that upfront. So if you’re going to rock a 3 battery, 5 battery or 20 battery mod just know that you will need to purchase all new batteries each time. If you can, get LG HG2s. They provide the perfect combination of high amp rating and capacity so you can get the most life out of your device.

Something I touched on in the last blog, rotating your batteries, becomes even more important the more batteries you have and it has to do with the way series circuits are configured. In series, the current passes through each cell on it’s way to the next and eventually to the end of the circuit (think of stacked batteries in a flashlight). This is as opposed to parallel which will pull from each battery separately to power the circuit. This property of series configuration causes one of the batteries in the circuit to take more force than the others. This creates a few causes for concern. When current passes through a battery it creates deposits on the connections inside increasing the internal resistance and lowering its’ total voltage capacity. From a safety standpoint, over time this can cause the battery in that spot to have a lower functional performance than the other 2.

Because series counts the 3 batteries as 1 it will multiply the voltage given by the 3 batteries. So instead of having a total max voltage of 4.2v x 3 (12.6V), if one was at 3.7v max, then your total would be 12.1v. This is problem because it then puts more strain on the others to produce the desired result. In effect, killing all 3 batteries faster. In a worst case scenario, this can also cause that battery to be depleted to a point lower than it’s recommended discharge rate and the point at which it would normally not power things. Because it’s in a series, the circuit may still run provided the other batteries are supplying enough voltage. If that happens, your battery could vent and/or damage your device.

This is the reason why it’s important to rotate your batteries in addition to having them married. You want your circuit to discharge evenly. Some people find it helpful to put a “1,2 and 3” on each of the batteries and rotate them clockwise each time you put them in. Also, never charge them inside the mod. If they can be charged externally you should do so. This will give your batteries the longest life possible and keep you safe. For more information on series and parallel, as well as general battery safety, be sure to check out my original blog on married batteries. As I mention in that blog, learning about batteries can be cumbersome and confusing but undoubtedly will pay off in the end and increase your understanding of other electronic products as well as vaporizers. If knowledge is power, then knowledge of power is double- powerful! Until next time, vape on!

The E-Cigarette Formaldehyde Study We"ve Been Waiting For is Here

Claims that e-cigarette aerosols contain dangerous concentrations of formaldehyde are still made often, despite the fact that this information is based on a study that many in the scientific community would like to see retracted due to poor methodology, unrealistic conditions, and the misinformation that has been passed on to the general public in its name. The questionable study used CE4 top-wicking clearomizers at voltages far exceeding the manufacturers maximum recommendation, and managed to produce some “formaldehyde-releasing agents” in the aerosol produced by them—and vapers have long been aware of this study and the reason its conclusions should be mostly ignored. A new study published in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, however, pits a CE4, a KangerTech Protank 1, an Innokin Gladius, an Aspire Nautilus, and a KangerTech Subtank against each other in an aldehyde showdown, and the results are actually a little surprising:

A Brief Review of The Joyetech Cubis Tank

I spent about two weeks messing around with the Cubis tank from Joyetech, and the coolest thing about it is that you can refill it and change the coil from the top, which I could be mistaken but I think that’s an industry first. There is no removable bottom section to this tank: the tank is one solid cup-shaped piece with an open, threaded top. The coil screws onto the bottom of the top cap, and when you assemble it the coil makes contact with the bottom of the cup to complete the circuit:

Leaked Photo Reveals Details About Upcoming Kanger Squonk Box and RDA

As has been pretty standard for upcoming KangerTech gear, another single leaked photo gives us early details about their new equipment. This time around it’s looking like an affordable bottom-feed RDA (“Subdrip”) and regulated squonk box mod (“Dripmod”) combo. Here’s the image containing all the known details so far:

Bad News For California E-Cigarette Industry, Vapers, and Young Smokers

Four bills were passed by the California State Assembly today, which taken together define e-cigarettes as tobacco products, will prohibit smokers under 21 from legally switching to e-cigarettes and vapor products in the state, and allow additional city and county taxes to be imposed on any vape-related products. Also, if you work somewhere in the state that currently allows indoor vaping, they will no longer be allowed to do so unless you work for a smoke shop, vape shop, or cigarette/e-cigarette/e-liquid wholesaler. These bills are all currently expected to pass in the Senate and be signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown.

The 300 Watt Regulated Spartan Box Mod With Temp Control Is On The Way

It looks like Vapmod has a new 300 watt regulated box mod on its way, and DNA Vapes says they should be shipping out by late March. The thing runs on three 18650 cells, has a max output of 300 watts, 12.6 volts, and 40 amps, and also includes temperature control for nickel, titanium, and stainless steel. It’s not clear to me whether it’s supposed to be called “Spartan” or “Spartans” yet though. Vapmod has it listed as Spartans in the leaked image, but DNA Vapes has it listed as Spartan. Either way, what the hell are you gonna do with 300 watts?

California"s Tobacco Tax Initiative Can"t Justify A Tax On Vaping

Save Lives California is currently collecting signatures for a voter initiative they hope to get on the November 2016 ballot, which would add a $2.00 tax per pack on cigarettes in the state and also place “an equivalent tax on products containing nicotine derived from tobacco, including e-cigarettes”, though they don’t have any idea what that means yet, and they intend to just figure out the details later:

The KangerTech KBOX 70W TC and the Latest Internal Battery Mods

In over four years of vaping, I have yet to own an 18650 battery. I’ve messed around with plenty of devices that use them, but outside of work I stick to devices with internal batteries, because the last thing I want to add to my vaping habit is more hassle. For plenty of people, external batteries don’t add too much inconvenience, but I’m not one of those people. Having to take batteries out and throw them in a charger daily is just added time and money that I don’t want to invest unless I have to. Fortunately, I don’t have to because there are still a few great devices with internal batteries and simple USB charging (and yes, I do know that many devices with external 18650 batteries can charge them via USB as well). After a full year with an iStick 50W box mod as my standard everyday device, the buttons were getting just a little worn out and it was time for something with just a hair more power to use with some of the latest tanks that can handle it. The KBOX 70W TC was exactly that plus temperature control options for nickel and titanium coils. Assuming I don’t have any major issues or a sudden lust for more power (I’m looking at you, Tesla Nano), I imagine this will be my daily device for the next year or so.
